Gelatin Filters
Ideal for maintaining the viability of collected microorganisms, the Gelatin Filters provide unequalled bacteria retention levels for quantitative analysis. The high moisture content helps to maintain microorganism viability for sampling periods up to 30 minutes. The filters dissolve easily when placed on agar, allowing for a gentle transition from sample medium to growth medium. For maximum culturability and superior collection of inhalable-size bioaerosols, combine 25 mm gelatin filters with the SKC Button Sampler.
Description
- Absolute retention rate:
- 99.9995% for Bacillus subtilis var. niger spores ‡

- 99.9% for T1 phages (coliphages) ‡
- High moisture content
- Maintain microbe viability for short sampling periods
- Completely water soluble
- Dissolve easily when placed on agar
- Prerequisite for virus sampling
- Pre-sterilised by gamma irradiation
- Ideal for monitoring in pharmaceutical plants
- Can be used to monitor in areas where disinfectants or antibiotics are present
‡ At inlet velocities of 0.25 m/s, 0.3 m/s (80 %RH), and 0.3 m/s (50 %RH) respectively
Specifications
Material | Water-soluble gelatin |
Pore Size | While having a nominal pore size of 3 µm, a higher capture efficiency of sub-micron particles can be expected due to the separations that occur on the surface and within the filter. It is through inertial impaction and diffusional interception that these filters can remove particles much smaller than 3 µm. |
Thickness | Approximately 250 µm |
Sterilisation | Presterilised by gamma radiation. Filters individually wrapped and packaged in units of five, each in a polyethylene bag. |
Thermal Resistance | Maximum 60°C (140°F) |
Residual Dampness Content | 46 to 49% |
Conditions for Use | Maximum room temperature is 30°C (86°F); maximum relative humidity is 85%. |
Sampling Time | 30 minutes at typical indoor relative humidity |
Sampling Flow Rate | 1 to 4 L/min for filter sampling of biological contaminants using a standard filter cassette, Button Sampler, or the IOM |
Storage | Gelatin filters may be stored in low humidity, ambient conditions; storage between 4 and 8°C (39.2 and 46.4°F) is recommended. |
Caution: Do not store gelatin filters below 4°C (39.2°F). Condensation during thawing will dissolve filter. Avoid exposing filters to moisture, chemical vapors, and extreme temperatures. | |
Shelf-life | 3 years from date of manufacture |
Analysis | Direct method or indirect method. Gelatin filters dissolve when placed on agar plates. |
